New land to grow food for the school
The problem: Four problems combine to have created an issue that nearly closed the school early in December 2008.
A last-minute donation from Mission Direct enabled the school to remain open until the end of term.
A global shortage of grain crops sent basic food prices spiralling upwards, while availability became scarce. Refugees for war-torn neighbours placed extra demands on food availability. Increased fuel prices made the importation of food to land-locked Uganda very expensive. The falling value of the dollar and pound reduced significantly its buying power in Uganda, even without the other three problems this of itself would have created a difficulty.
The solution: To ensure that the school is less dependent on the fluctuations of the food and financial markets.
The vision: To acquire a plot of land close enough to the school to make it practical to farm, then to grow a significant portion the basic food needed to feed the school.
The progress: Farm land has been generously lent to the school, and this has been cleared and prepared with an abundant potato crop in 2008/9 (potatoes are very good for preparing virgin soils for other crops). However this land is some 250km away from the school.
The gift of a school truck has enabled the school to farm even this land even at significant cost and distance.
Suitable farm land has been identified closer to the school, and funds are being collected to purchase the land.

New Girls Dormitory for the Primary School
The problem: There is a need to create more classroom space at the Rukungiri Modern Primary School to cater for the growing number of pupils. It is not practical to build additional classrooms because of the restricted space available.
The solution: To place other facilities of the school complex outside of the main campus, and reuse the existing space for classrooms.
The vision: There is land available adjacent to the new Nursery School, just a hundred metres or so from the Primary School. The vision is to buy this land and build on it a girls dormitory. The current dormitory could then be re-used for classroom space.
The progress: The land has been identified, and the project is in the pstage of prayerful seeking.

Additional boarding accommodation for the primary school
The problem: Nursery children who board currently have to stay with older siblings at the primary school. This reduces the capacity of the primary school, and its revenue earning potential, since it is unable to take additional paying borders; and it reduces the capacity of the school as some classrooms are being used for accommodation instead.
As the nursery school becomes independent, and those classrooms get used for teaching, the capacity of the school will increase and require more boarding accommodation!
The solution: The obvious solution is to build more boarding accommodation, however buildings already surround the school play-ground, and so any solution would require putting an additional story on top of one of the existing single-story school blocks.
The vision: The vision that has driven the continual development of the schools and orphanage is the calling of God not to turn children away … to say ‘yes’ and to trust in God for the resources needed. Being faithful to this principle has always seen God’s faithful response.
The progress: The need has been identified, but plans and funds would be required.

Boarding and medical facilities for the nursery school
The problem: At present there are no medical or dormitory facilities at the nursery school. This puts pressure on the primary school, which needs its own additional dormitories and sanatorium; and adds to costs if a child needs to be kept at a clinic or hospital simply for isolation. Such a child would also need to be accompanied by one of the staff.
The solution: Medical facilities and dormitories are already planned to be built on top of the existing classrooms at the nursery school, along with staff accommodation.
The vision: To ensure that the nursery school can be run independently from the primary school, so that both may develop to meet the needs of the children who come.
The progress: The development of a second story on top of the primary school is awaiting completion of the ground floor.

Agricultural skills development at Gables
The problem: Acute food shortage in 2008 has led to the need for the school to grow its own food – or at least a good portion of its own food. In addition, orphans who fail to raise crops on inherited lands may forfeit those lands.
The solution: Train orphans and others in agriculture at the vocational training centre.
The vision: To develop an agricultural aspect to vocational training, from which would develop a number of beneficial initiatives:
-
Orphans could grow coffee on their inherited land and so secure it.
-
Gables could become the centre of a coffee cooperative, so enabling the orphans to get to market at a good price, and raising income for the centre.
-
Gables could develop a nursery for seedlings, again raising needed income from the community and providing plants for the schools farmland and orphans plots.
-
Graduates from the vocational could farm the schools land, earning an income and gaining experience
The progress: A student is currently in agricultural college being trained to become a teacher at the Gables vocational training centre. Money has been raised to buy coffee plants to cover about 10 orphans’ plots. Two plots have already been planted.
To contribute: Buy coffee seedlings for the orphan’s plots – as a birthday-card or Christmas-card gift for a relative of fiend. If you have agricultural skills plan a long trip to Rukungiri to help with training! If you have basic agricultural tools that could be sent, then send them too!
Extended conference hall for Rondavels
The problem: As Rondavels develops to meet the demands of an increasing number of visitors, so its main hall is fast becoming inadequate as a gathering centre. Already the school hall is providing an income as an examination hall. Although the Rondavels’ hall already hosts some conferences, its size limits potential additional use, for example as a dinning hall for weddings.
The solution: To extend the Rondavels’ hall.
The vision: To find additional ways of raising income for the work of the schools by using the facilities at Rondavels.
The progress: This project is still at the visioning stage.
To contribute: Architects and structural engineers could help with developing this vision. Money would also be needed to fund the extension.
